Governor’s Corner

Meet Mary Frederick

I first became involved with the Society of Women Engineers as a student member at the University of Vermont in the 1980s.  After graduating with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, I moved to California to work as a Transportation Engineer for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).  In 1992, a group of women in Fresno, California decided to Charter a Section and the San Joaquin Valley Section was formed in Region A.  After a move to Sacramento, I became involved with the Sacramento Valley Section of SWE.  In 2003, I obtained a Master of Science in Transportation Management from the Mineta Transportation Institute at San Jose State University.
I believe the SWE organization is a fantastic network of students, professionals, and educators striving to accomplish the SWE mission:  Aspire, Advance, Achieve.  Working with students and professionals to ensure information and resources are available to those interested in science, technology, and engineering careers, and those working in the engineering and technology fields.  I fully support the recent efforts to have increased student and younger member leadership in our section and region, bringing greater diversity to our organization.  As the Office Chief for Capital Project Skill Development, I am involved in the training and education of Caltrans employees and I am looking forward to further explore SWE networks and resources from this new perspective and area of interest.

I welcome all to post information of questions here for me to respond to. I am interested in hearing from all of the SWE members in our Region and learning how we can ensure you are getting the most from our organization and offer a range of programs that can assist you at work or at home.

  2. Good Day Mary Frederick,

I read about your organization’s work on your website and blog and am interested in connecting with SWE for potential collaborations, field trip opportunities, and volunteers.

I coordinate a Girls Inc. of Alameda County STEM after school program for 8th and 9th grade girls. We are currently piloting a National Science Foundation funded environmental technology and engineering curriculum, InnovaTE^3, that engages girls in team projects that range from Eco-friendly building design to off-the-grid product prototyping. During their project development process we take girls to companies around the where they meet women professionals involved in the practices they are exploring in the program. We also have women engineers visit afternoon workshops and engage in the hands-on-activities with the girls. Once their projects are complete, the girls present them to a panel of professionals that provide them with friendly feedback on their designs. We have both school year and summer programs that provide diverse volunteer opportunities for your members.

I would appreciate the opportunity to come to one of SWE’s meetings or events to give a brief 5 minute pitch on our program and the volunteer/field trip opportunities to your members. Please let me know if this is a possibility or if there is any one else in your organization that I could reach out to.

I greatly appreciate your time and consideration and look forward to hearing from you.

    With gratitude,

    Carla Schulz
